Timber or composite: which suits your garden?
We build both. Which one is right depends on how much looking after you want to do in five years.
Timber. Cheaper to buy, warmer underfoot, and it looks like what it is. It also wants re-treating, and in a North East winter it will move, silver off and go slippery in the shaded corner if nobody touches it. Plenty of people are happy with that and just get the brush out every couple of springs.
Composite. More to buy and then close to nothing to do. It does not need staining, it does not splinter, and the colour it is on the day it goes down is roughly the colour it stays. There is one in the job book just below: rosewood composite on a brand new treated subframe, with concealed clips so there is not a screw head in sight.
What actually decides it is usually the frame underneath, not the boards on top. A good deck is a good subframe with something nailed to it.

Built for North East weather
A deck in Northumberland spends more of its life wet than dry, and most of the decks that fail here did not fail at the boards.
So the frame is treated timber sized for the span rather than whatever was cheapest, sat on proper supports, with joist hangers where they belong and protective tape over the top of every joist so water sits on the tape instead of soaking into the end grain. On the composite deck in our job book that meant 5x2 treated joists, joist hangers, protective tape over every joist and concealed clips for the boards.
None of it shows on the day the deck is finished. It is what decides whether the deck is still flat and solid long after the last board goes down.

Gardens in Gosforth, Jesmond, Heaton and Ponteland, and north through Cramlington, Bedlington and Ashington to Morpeth, where we are based. A deck is priced on the days it takes plus the materials. Here is the day rate behind every one.
How much does it cost to have a deck built?
£250 to £300 a day.
Box & Beam’s own day rate, plus the timber or composite you choose. Not a market average.
How much does decking cost per square metre?
We do not price it that way.
Decking is quoted by the days it takes at the day rate above, plus the materials you choose. A rate per square metre hides the subframe, which is the half of the job that decides how long the deck lasts.
Do you provide a written quotation?
Free, always.
A look at the garden, the slope and what is under the old deck, then the scope and the cost in writing. The look and the written price are both free.
Is there a minimum job?
No minimum.
We will come out for a gate that needs rehanging as readily as for a whole garden.
Our own prices, correct as of September 2026. Size, slope, the ground underneath and timber or composite all move the figure, and that is what the visit is for. Box & Beam is not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add to any price here.

Decking and garden questions
Composite or timber decking, which should I choose?
Timber costs less to buy, feels warmer underfoot and looks like timber, but it wants re-treating and it will move and silver off in a North East winter. Composite costs more up front and then asks almost nothing of you: no staining, no splinters, and it stays roughly the colour it went down. If you would rather not think about it again, composite. If you like the look and do not mind a brush every other spring, timber.
Do you build the subframe as well, or only lay the boards?
The subframe as well, and it is the part of the job worth paying for. Treated timber sized for the span, on proper supports, with joist hangers and protective tape over the joists so water sits on the tape rather than soaking into the timber. Laying good boards onto somebody else’s tired frame is how a deck ends up bouncing in two years.
Do you remove and dispose of the old decking?
Yes. Taking up the old deck and getting rid of it is written into the quote, so you can see what it adds before you agree. The ground underneath gets a proper look at the same time, because that is usually where the reason the old one failed is sitting.
When is the best time to have decking built?
Any time the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Asking in autumn or winter gives you the most choice of dates, and the deck is finished and settled before you want to sit on it.
Is there a deposit, and when do I pay the rest?
A deposit secures the booking and we agree a start date together. The balance is paid at the end, once we have walked round the finished deck with you and you are happy with it.
How long does a deck take?
It depends on the size of the deck and whether there are steps or a pergola. Because we price by the day, your written quote tells you how many days it will take before you agree to anything.
