How much does a joiner charge per day?
£250 to £300.
Box & Beam’s own day rate, not a market average.
How much does it cost to hang an internal door?
£65 to £85.
£65 to hang an eggshell door, £85 for oak. Anything beyond hanging the door is on the written quote.
How much does a room of skirting and architrave cost?
By the day.
A room’s worth is day-rate work. You get the number of days in writing before anything starts.
What do fitted wardrobes and alcove units cost?
By the day.
Built-in work is priced by the days it takes, not per metre, because no two alcoves are the same size.

Fitted wardrobes and alcove units
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are never square, never the same as each other, and never the size of anything you can buy in a shop. That is the whole argument for having them built.
We make and fit wardrobes, alcove units and shelving to the space that is actually there, scribed to the wall so there is no filler strip and no gap collecting dust. Painted or in timber, with the doors and handles you choose.

Renovating? You might only need second fix
If you are renovating rather than building, there is a good chance you only need second fix. The structure is already there. What is tired is the trim: doors that were painted shut in 1994, skirting in three different profiles because someone patched a room at a time, a door that has not shut properly for years.
That is a smaller job than people expect, and it changes how a house feels more than almost anything else you can spend the same money on.

Anthracite grey French doors
Supplied and fitted four sets of anthracite grey French doors. The hardware was upgraded to satin nickel/chrome handles and Ultion thumb-turn cylinders (a thumb-turn lets you lock and unlock from inside without a key), keyed alike so one key opens every lock.
LVT flooring and skirting
The old flooring came up, the subfloor was prepared and levelled, and new LVT (luxury vinyl tile) went down. New skirting and the finishing joinery went on after.
Second fix across Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumberland
Most of our work is around Morpeth, where we are based, and across Cramlington, Ponteland, Ashington and Alnwick, with Gosforth, Jesmond and Heaton on the Newcastle side. Older houses are rarely square and almost nothing in them is a standard size. That is normal, and it is why we scribe to the wall rather than fill the gap.
Second fix rarely arrives on its own. If the walls are coming out too, that is first fix first, and we would sequence the whole thing as a property renovation so nobody is waiting on anybody. Second fix questions
What is second fix joinery?
Second fix is the carpentry that happens after the plastering: hanging the doors, running the skirting and architrave, fitting wardrobes, window boards and flooring. It is the joinery you can see and touch once the job is finished, which is why it is judged on the finish rather than on the structure underneath.
What is the difference between first fix and second fix?
First fix is everything before the plasterers: studwork, joists, roof trusses, door linings. Second fix is everything after: the doors, trim and floors. A new build or extension needs both, in that order. A renovation often only needs second fix.
Who will I deal with?
Alex. He visits, measures, writes the quote and stays your one point of contact through the job. If it also needs a plasterer, electrician or tiler, he brings in qualified trades he trusts.
What happens if more work turns up once the job has started?
Alex talks it through with you first. Any change or extra work is agreed with you before it is carried out.
Is there a deposit, and when do I pay the rest?
A deposit secures the booking and the start date. The balance is paid at the end, after Alex has walked you through the finished work and you are happy with it.
Do you supply materials as well as fit them?
Either way. On some jobs Alex supplies the doors, the flooring and the trim and fits them; on others you have already bought everything and he fits it. Whichever it is, the quotation says which of the two it is before anything is ordered.
Do you clean up once the job is finished?
Yes. The working area is left clean and tidy, and Alex walks through the finished work with you to make sure you are happy before the final balance is paid.
Do you do just one room?
Yes. One room, one door, one set of wardrobes. There is no minimum job and we will not try to talk you into more than you asked for.
