First fix and second fix, in plain English
Most quotes you get will use these two phrases without explaining them, so here they are in plain English.
First fix is the carpentry that happens before the plasterers arrive. Studwork, floor joists, roof trusses, door linings, the timber that makes the shape of the building. Once it is finished you cannot see any of it. Every trade that comes after is working off it, so it has to be right first time.
Second fix is everything after the plastering. Hanging the doors, running the skirting and architrave, the staircase parts, fitted wardrobes, flooring. This is the carpentry you actually look at every day, so it is judged on the finish rather than on whether it holds the roof up.
A renovation often only needs second fix. A new build or an extension needs both, in that order.

Most work is quoted by the number of days it takes at the day rate below, and the days go in the written quotation before anything starts.
How much does a joiner charge per day?
£250 to £300.
Box & Beam’s own day rate, not a market average.
What does it cost to hang an internal door?
£65 to £85.
£65 for an eggshell door, £85 for oak. Anything beyond hanging the door is on the written quote.
Do you provide a written quotation?
Free, always.
A visit to the property, a proper look at the job, then a written quotation setting out the scope and the cost. There is no obligation to go ahead.
Is there a minimum job?
No minimum.
Big and small and everything in between. A single door is a job, and so is the whole house.
These are our own prices, correct as of September 2026. What your job costs still depends on access, the state of the existing work and the spec, which is what the free quote is for. Box & Beam is not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add to any price here.

We come and look, then send a written price with the scope spelled out. Free, always.

Book it in
A deposit secures the booking and we agree a start date. Materials and any other trades are sorted before anybody turns up.

Do the work
First fix, second fix, or both, in the right order. You get updates as it goes, and nothing extra is done without talking to you first.

Snag and hand over
The work is checked over and the area left clean and tidy. We walk round it with you, and the final balance is paid after that, not before.

Are you fully insured?
Yes. Box & Beam carries £5m public liability cover with Markel and employers’ liability cover on top. Alex is CSCS carded and DBS checked.
What is the difference between a joiner and a carpenter?
In practice the words overlap, and in the North East most people say joiner for both. The traditional split is that a joiner makes the timber components, often in a workshop, and a carpenter fits them on site. We do both, so it is not a distinction you need to worry about when you call.
Do I need a joiner or a builder?
For anything made of timber, a joiner. For a bigger job you do not need to choose. We do the joinery, the groundworks and the plumbing ourselves, and bring in a qualified electrician, plasterer and tiler when the job needs them, so you deal with one person from start to finish.
